"With a well-paced plot, mounting tension, and a surprising (real) twist at the end, this is a good book."
Historical Novel Society

BASED ON A TRUE STORY
During the Great Depression, high-profile kidnappings became more and more commonplace. On December 17, 1931, self-made millionaire fashion designer Nell Donnelly becomes the next casualty.

Senator Reed, a family friend, steps in to lead the investigation. Impatient with ineffective police efforts, he is willing to go to extraordinary measures. How extraordinary? How about enlisting the help of two of Kansas City's most notorious crime bosses. This deal with two devils may very well be Reed's downfall. But more importantly, will the involvement of hardened gangsters lead to Nell Donnelly's freedom or her demise?

"The story was fast-paced, and it was fascinating to learn about such an overlooked case."

"I hope you don't have much planned for the next few days, because as soon as I promised I would stop reading and go to bed, I would end up grabbing my iPad for just one more chapter..."

"ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY FABULOUS.
I have always been a big fan of true crime stories and this book was one of the very, very best. Once I started reading, I absolutely couldn't stop until it was over. Also, what an unexpected and completely mind-blowing conclusion. WOW. This is a definite must-read."

An excellent if a tiny bit short read, this story had a little bit of everything. There is romance, action, intrigue, and a lot of interesting characters in this story. We even get a slow building romance toward the end of the novel between Nelly and Senator Reed that leaves the story hopeful. Paul makes an interesting and conflicted character who is self-centered and mean with a very contradictory personality. In one scene he goes from lamenting his missing wife and his love for her to a woman he is cheating on his wife with, then having sex with the woman, and then lamenting his wife again.

A note, there is some graphic depictions of sexual activities in this novel. They aren't overly offensive or descriptive, but it definitely helps for people to understand that it is in there.

The important thing about this story is that it is fiction with flavorings of the real event spread throughout. It is interesting and entertaining, but it's not meant to be a documentary. It's meant to use these people to tell the story of Nelly Don and her life, but not for the nitpicky types who want perfect details. if you go into this book looking for a fictional and entertaining story with a lot of interesting scenes and different story-telling elements, then this is an excellent read!

The Abduction of Nelly Don edition by Patrice Williams Marks Jake The Indie Editor Brian Schell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I have both a digital version of this book and the paperback. I was impressed with the level of writing and storytelling of the author. That the story of Nelly Don is fascinating, and the book kicked it up a notch. The pacing of the story keeps you interested chapter after chapter, with each chapter ending with a mini-cliffhanger.

I also like the postscript where we find out what happened to the real people after the story is done. Don't read the backend first! SPOILER ALERT!

I never knew of Nelly Don, but am glad I discovered her and this book.
This book is outside the type of book I normally read. It was a great read and oh what a story. It is well written and fascinating. Thank you for taking this true story and bringing it to life in this book. 👍
Rarely do you read stories of strong and professional women during this era. Nelly was strong, decisive, fair and compassionate.I found it a compelling yet an easy read. It was so gripping that I found myself wanting to do more research into the background of Nelly's and Senator Reed's lives. I can clearly see this becoming a made for TV movie. Highly recommend this book to all who enjoy a good mystery novel.
Action, adventure and history all rolled up in one amazing book! After buying the book for my fire I also bought the audio version. Loved the narrator making it fun to listen to over & over again. If you haven't read or listen to this book you are missing out. Great author, sent this book to my dad as a Christmas gift and have purchased other books by Patrice Williams Marks.
This was the first book I've read by Patrice Williams Marks. I am truly glad I read it. I read it in 31/2 hours. Definitely an edge of the seat book. I never would have thought that Nelly and Reed were involved. And that David was reed's. Paul was a pig with his affairs. but in the end he paid to get her back .This was truly a great book. Thanks to Miss Marks for such a good job.
It was interesting that this was based on a true story. I don't recall ever having heard about her kidnapping. Nellie Don was an amazing woman for the times she lived in. Her ingenuity and business skills were advanced for the era and she was lucky enough to have a husband who was able to further her business interests. Her kidnapping was unfortunate, but that happened often in that era. Times were tough and conmen were common. Senator Reed was a surprise character in the end. It made for an interesting twist I was not expecting. I'd read it again and would recommend it to anyone else who is looking for a fast read that will hold your attention.
It is amazing that such a wonderful woman such as Nelly Don, who in her own way advanced the women's cause, is not well known. Nelly proved in her time, that a woman could start a retail empire with her sewing machine and her kitchen table and break new ground in women's wear. Patrice Williams Marks does an excellent job of blending fact with fiction and a lot of suspense and action to bring us this entrancing tale. I will certainly read more of her books!
